Ik leerde Lucie kennen in november 2012 in Nepal. Ik was in Nepal voor de 'Asian World Conference' over het opruimen van Azië, en bezocht de weken daarna NGO's op datzelfde gebied. Zo ontmoette ik Lucie.
Lucie werkt bij WEPCO. Een organisatie dat het afval van 2000 huishoudens in Kathmandu Valley ophaalt en verwerkt. Dit klinkt eenvoudig, maar is erg bijzonder in een land waar geen afvalverwerking bestaat, en waar de overheid geen verantwoording neemt voor hygiëne. WEPCO is ontstaan uit een vrouwennetwerk afkomstig uit alle kasten die afval verzamelen en recyclen. Ze hebben ondertussen een groot netwerk en werken op vele gebieden rondom afval. Lucie is bij hen sinds oktober 2011, en onderhield zichzelf in die periode van haar spaargeld.
Het dagelijks leven in Nepal is niet duur, maar gratis is het ook niet. En aan Lucie's spaargeld komt nu echt een eind. 'Ja meisje, terug naar huis' zal de nuchtere Nederlander denken. Maar Lucie ís thuis. En wil graag blijven. WEPCO en het 'Cash the Trash' project dat ze opstart, zijn nog niet in staat om haar ook uit te betalen.
Via de 1%club is er een fantastisch bedrag gecrowdfund voor 'Cash the Trash'. Dit mag om goede redenen niet ingezet worden voor salaris. Maar, Cash the Trash kan nog niet zonder Lucie. En Lucie niet zonder Nepal. Dus, om beiden gelukkig te maken gaan we proberen het zelf te doen: Crowd Funden.

Deze video maakte ik wandelend langs de Bagmati rivier. De rivier scheidt Kathmandu en Lalitpur van elkaar. Hij stroomt van het Himalaya gebergte richting India en komt langs dorpen en landerijen. Eenmaal in Kathmandu worden bij de Pashupatinath tempel overleden Hindu's gecremeerd in de Bagmati rivier.
En ondertussen stort iedereen er zijn afval in. Plastic. Papier. Jerrycans. Ontlasting. Ijzer. Autobanden. Kleding. En meer. Als je iets niet meer hebben wilt, gooi je het op straat of in de rivier. Simple it is.
Iedereen weet dat dit onhandig en ongezond is. Maar wat doe je als je leeft in een land waar geen centrale afvalverwerking bestaat, en waar de overheid niet mee helpt?
WEPCO, de organisatie waar Lucie voor werkt ligt een paar kilometer verderop aan deze rivier. En is van enorm belang voor de gezondheid van Kathmandu Valley.

Waarom 1,-? Omdat je in je eentje snel gaat, maar met z'n allen verder komt! Als duizend mensen deze maand allemaal een euro geven, dan kan Lucie vijf maanden leven in Kathmandu.
Wat doet die teller daar? Naast het feit dat het gewoon leuk is, maakt het de actie ook praktisch en compact. Dertig dagen gaan we crowdfunden voor Lucie. En we hopen dat het lukt! Duizend mensen in dertig dagen moet toch kunnen, denk je niet?

"Two weeks ago we have finally received all the money from 1%Club. Which is amazing! We have started many many things already! And it is all going well! We are changing the whole system of waste segregation and selling. We arrange all the safety equipment for our workers, uniform, shelter, etc. to make their work more safe and easy.
We have also started the pilot project of household segregation. And because it is going really well, we will expand the pilot from 50 to 200 households!!!
Also there are more and more people contacting me regarding Cash the Trash, as they get some information about it and they wanna join :) So yeah it is going really well!
As you know I have been here the whole time as a volunteer. And it is becoming too difficult for me. Regarding money and visa too. I am applying for the journalist visa again, and hopefully it will work out. Otherwise there is one more option of research visa, but it is more expensive.
Unfortunately I haven´t received any funds to support my self so far. I'll have to leave probably in 2 months in the end of May. I really do not want to, because not only I feel like home here...but also I do not feel like leave everything I have started here, after it has finally started to move on...Well, what can I do now. Is just let the door open for what ever comes... We will see..."
This is Lucie, she is working in Kathmandu, Nepal to change the waste situation over there. The last 1,5 year she worked totally voluntary. But, logically, she is running out of her savings. What to do?
Go back to Europe, and leave all that is now growing and exploring? Or find a way to stay for a little while, until the waste organization can pay her a salary?
I decided to help her, and try to give her at least 5 more months in Kathmandu. If we collect € 1000,- we already made it happen!
